The story behind this painting begins with a rather sad event, the suicide of a young man who I knew casually but saw almost daily. He was always happy and telling jokes, but, apparently, was not the same on the inside. His death hit me very hard, as I saw him the morning of the day he hung himself, and painting this was imperative, intense, and cathartic. Like him, the background of is full of rage and darkness but underneath are areas of bright color that appear when you look closely. I came to realize that going through periods of feeling worthless makes it impossible to see the bright colors that are our authentic selves. But still…there is a golden light that shines out of each of us, even when we think we are surrounded by darkness.
