The model, Jeanne, was a close friend and instrumental not only in helping me cope with the loss of my partner, but encouraging me to get back into painting. She offered to model and never rushed me or complained as I struggled to find the rhythm of drawing that had once been so natural. She had gotten the tattoo that runs down her side on one of her many solo trips abroad. It is written in Thai Sanskrit and means “Be the change that you want to see in the world.” If ever I met anyone who lived that phrase it was Jeanne, who passed only a few years after I did this painting. I miss her to this day but, fortunately, I have this painting to remind me of her.
