I Am Hopeful, the last in a series of three paintings, turns toward the light.
The word HOPE appears throughout the painting—layered, repeated, impossible to ignore. But it didn’t begin that way.
I Am Hopeful began as an expression of anger, frustration, and disappointment over the 2024 Presidential Election. I started by writing over and over around and across the surface: “I am so disappointed.”
And then, partway through, something shifted.
The words changed.
They became “I am so hopeful.”
That transition is still visible in the lower right-hand corner—where one way of seeing gives way to another.
The colors lift. A sun emerges. The weight begins to loosen.
This piece doesn’t deny what came before—it transforms it—choosing, deliberately, to add light rather than more darkness.
