Living in Hawai’i is one of the greatest blessings in my life – being here literally saved me.
When I had cancer, – with no health insurance – Hawai’i was the perfect place for me to heal and get back on my feet. In a lot of ways, this place became part of my recovery.
But being an abstract painter here has its challenges. Many people are understandably drawn to Hawaiiana – images of its landscapes, people, and familiar places. There’s a strong audience for that work, and many artists do it beautifully.
For a long time, I wondered how I could reflect on my feelings about my island home in my own visual language…
That’s how my Slice of Aloha collage series began.
Each piece starts as a single large sheet — usually a map of the islands. I draw Polynesian tattoo motifs and petroglyph designs, collage photos, and layer in elements that reflect my island home. Then I cut, mat, and frame them as individual works, as stylish as anything you’ll see in high-end interior designs.
Each Slice Of Aloha collage comes with a French Creme mat in a black frame. Sizes vary.
