This painting came to me after I’d been watching the nomination proceedings of Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court. Some of the questions were so ridiculously absurd that this image popped, finished, into my head. I’ve never really understood racism. It’s ludicrous to think that anyone could ever be more or less than anyone else simply because of the pigments in their skin. I was raised in the church, and “Jesus Loves The Little Children” is one of the first songs we learned in Sunday school. The short little song, that any preschooler whose been in Sunday school can sing, is all you need to hear to understand that we are ALL equal. The big blocks of color in the background directly reflect the words of the song, while the swatches in front are all various colors of skin tones matched to friends and neighbors.
