First I, Then We, Now Us was inspired by a friend whose family recently settled into a home high in Nu‘uanu Valley on O‘ahu.
When they arrived, the house was nearly swallowed by the surrounding forest—lush, overgrown, and untamed in that way only a cooler, wetter climate can sustain. What could have felt overwhelming became an invitation.
With three teenagers, a lively household, and a small pack of lovable dogs, she set about shaping the chaos. Slowly, the wildness gave way—not to control, but to collaboration. The result is a layered, terraced garden filled with vibrant tropical life, alongside a home that now feels fully claimed and deeply lived in.
After an evening spent there—surrounded by friends, stories, and the kind of warmth that only comes from a space made meaningful over time—I found myself moved not just by the transformation of the land, but by hers.
First I, Then We, Now Us reflects that evolution: from independence, to partnership, to something larger and more interconnected. First I, Then We, Now Us speaks to the beautiful, complicated, often messy weaving together of lives—where growth isn’t linear, and harmony is something you build, not find.
Painted on gallery-wrapped canvas, First I, Then We, Now Us can be framed or hung as is.
