In Hawaiian mythology Pele is the Goddess of Creation. Living in the active volcanos on the Big Island of Hawai’i, she is constantly adding new ‘aina (land) to the island. Pele’s Hair is the name given to the fine strands of glass produced when hot lava hits the cool ocean water. It is also the local name of an air plant (also called Spanish Moss) that grows profusely in Hawaii, including in my back yard. While the imprint of a cutting from our Pele’s Hair plant was intentional, the form that appeared during the process of painting it was purely coincidental (or was it???).
