Enigma is one of my earliest sociopolitical paintings. It began with two bold orange squares sliced in half by a sharp silver-blue blade—an attempt to reflect the dismantling of the lies and distortions that have become so common in politics, social media, and the daily news cycle.
But the painting stalled. It felt too literal, too controlled, and it simply wasn’t interesting. At the time, I was just beginning to explore how to communicate through abstraction, and in a moment of frustration I pulled out a brush and made a few reckless, messy passes of paint across the surface. Suddenly an entirely different image appeared. Something alive. Something unexpected. And in that moment of clarity, the painting revealed the path forward.
That day taught me an important lesson—both in art and in life:
When in doubt… be bold.
