Composition With Poetry #3 is painted on 3 wood panels attached to a single frame, meant to hang as is without a frame. It began as a study in a genre often referred to as “Field Painting,” a tradition that includes artists such as Mark Rothko and Marsha Meyers. The work started with layers of intuitive painting that treated the panels as one unified field. It wasn’t until many layers later that the individual fields gradually emerged.
But as always, what was happening in the world seeped into the studio with me. And, as always, I let process hold me in a space where I could make some sense out of the chaos that saturates the 24-hour news cycle.
As the thoughts that I wanted to bring into this painting began to take shape, I realized that connecting what was happening intuitively in the work with what I was thinking and feeling marked the beginning of an entire body of work. Now, as I paint, I stay open to thoughts becoming words. They don’t always show themselves – but when they do, the process is cathartic, and I feel that work has the potential to reach someone who needs to see and hear it.
The original poem on Composition With Poetry #3 reads:
Art listens to the struggle
of a world that claws at reason –
paper crowns,
paper laws.
It creates shapes that rise
like lanterns in a blackout,
color spilling like protests on wet pavement.
It comes a door,
a way through the wreckage.
