34 Counts emerged slowly.
Built through layers of paint, collage, and mark-making, it resisted resolution for months. Like many abstract works, it moved through a long “messy middle” — shifting, evolving, and refusing to settle into anything final.
At one point, a row of tally marks appeared near the center of the composition. They stayed. Days later, I stopped and counted them.
Thirty-four.
Thirty-four counts.
In that moment, the painting revealed what it had been trying to say.
The surrounding elements — turbulent, layered, and in motion — came together more easily after that, as if the work had finally found its footing.
