When I began painting Composition With Poetry #2, I couldn’t see what it would evolve into. At that point I had committed to limiting my palette to blue – studying how the color shifts depending on how I changed the complementary pigment I added to it.
I feel a deep affinity for blue, not just because of the memories it carries from my childhood, but because, for me, it represents a way of thinking that pushes back against the chaos I see around us – a calm counterpoint to the aggressive “orange” energy that feels so dominant in our culture right now.
In this painting, the bold shapes and sharper, more agitated lines embody that tension – while the more fluid lines suggest the kind of thoughtful, measured thinking that is so urgently needed. Together with the poetry embedded in Composition With Poetry #2, the painting creates a space where anyone affected by this chaos can be seen, felt, and understood.
The poem reads:
Humans will always be drawn to conflict
the need to have more –
Thinking there’s only one way to be right,
Mistaking falsehoods for fact.
Art can’t fix those who are broken,
it can only be a space to connect to
someone who understands how you feel.
